10. Emotional Intelligence

Imagine a loved one waiting for COVID-19 to draw out their last, lonely breath.

Imagine being barred from being with them.

Imagine heartache everlasting.

Imagine John Lennon at the white piano singing

“Imagine there's no heaven

It's easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us, only sky

Imagine all the people

Livin' for today…”

…snapping back to “normal”

Still living for today.

Imagine the first three lines having no impact. (Did you look back?)

Is this the snap-back we’re waiting for?

Our real crisis is not a communicable disease we call COVID-19.

Our real crisis is losing emotional intelligence.

We covered-up for fear of losing ‘face’, ceding time to a virus going viral.

We hid in fear of economic upset, risking health that fuels a strong economy.

We learnt of exponential growth as it drove us to connect emotionally above the chaos.

We learnt to believe the experts, medics, modellers, and nurses over nay-sayers.

We learnt to feel, hear and trust the voice of our people best placed to act.

Let’s trust: The changes we’ve made in the short term make business sense in the long term. We know it’s emotionally intelligent. We know it’s viable.

Let’s assure we never snap back to the old “normal” of linear thinking, point solutions, short-term gain and long-term loss.
